Risperdal is one of the drugs which have got longest history of disputes and difficulties than any medication available in the market at its peak. In the US, Risperdal was used commonly as antipsychotic. In early of 1999 reports started to surface in regard of problems that arise using Risperdal in children but it was not approved to use in children.

A company named Janssen and its parent company has shown that Johnson & Johnson improperly marketed Risperdal for unapproved uses.

In 2001, out of drug lawsuits Miami Herald has reported about the side effects of Risperdal including development of gynecomastia in juvenile males of Florida Foster Care System. They were given Risperdal for restraint that was seen for more than two years.
In 2002, the Janssen Pharmaceuticals has issued one warning letter to the Canadian practitioner on regard of risk involved in prescribing Risperdal to elderly dementia patients but without warning US practitioners till now. The medication is responsible for stroke cases of at least 37 including death of 16.

In 2005, FDA has asked for a Black Box showing ‘most severe warning against this medication’ to be included in Risperdal Label and as practitioners warning for antipsychotic usage in elderly dementia patients.
In 2006 when Risperdal got approved as medication for autism in children, then a clinical study of Duke University has shown that this drug is association with gynecomastia and in girl’s premature breast development. Also shown side effects like lactation and gynecomastia in women who are not nursing or pregnant.
Despite these drug lawsuits, FDA has approved the usage of medication in children more than 1200, out of which 31 were dead by 1999-2008.

The Wall Street Journal in the following year has reported Risperdal impact on increased prolactin level and experts shown 70% of child having gynecomastia is due to Risperdal.
In 2010 case was filed by a man of 21 years who took Risperdal as off-label medication from 1999-2004 and resulted in gynecomastia and emotional trauma.
In 2012, a drug lawsuit was filed against Johnson & Johnson for improper marketing of Risperdal and got fined.
Over 420 additional Risperdal lawsuits including 100 of gynecomastia was reported during 2012 by Bloomberg News.
